How to Make 10 Natural Beauty Products

Make your own beauty products to keep harmful chemicals off of your skin. Homemade creams, soaps and other products can be just as luxurious and fragrant as their commercial counterparts but you can avoid artificial chemicals – and the headache of dealing with all that packaging waste.

Although beauty products don’t have to list their ingredients, they often contain pthalates, formaldehyde, parabens and other chemicals that have been shown to harm animals in lab tests, and which are being phased out in Europe in favor of less toxic alternatives. Prenatal exposure to pthalates, for example, has been linked to liver and kidney damage and effects on baby boys’ reproductive organs, and the chemical has been implicated in male obesity. The CDC found the potentially harmful sunscreen ingredient oxybenzone in 97% of Americans tested.

Plus, you don’t want any nasty stuff getting into our fragile waterways, do you? That’s what happens when cosmetics and personal care products are washed down the drain. Frogs and aquatic life are highly susceptible to damage from even minute contamination.

Make a habit of washing your face a couple of hours before bedtime. If you wait until you’re tired, you are more likely to blow – used to “toxins and impurities to stay there all night,” says Laurie Polis dermatologist in New York Another consequence? You miss the best time to treat your skin. “At night, there is no blood flow to the surface of the skin, and there’s nothing else on your face to interfere with absorption,” said Polis.

In fact, many dermatologists say they can not tell which side of the people face to sleep in the number of wrinkles here.

3. How to Raise

Sleeping with your head elevated on two pillows, or the headrest of his bed area of 2 – to 4-inch pieces of wood. Gravity helps the circulation of lymph and blood so that the liquid does not accumulate, said Polis.

4. Save money, without wrinkles

10 Cosmetic Uses for Everyday Foods

Getting egg on your face can be a good thing

The folds in a chef’s hat are supposed to symbolize the number of ways that chef knows how to prepare an egg, but we’re sure there’s at least one missing: as a facial mask. Many common foods can be used as cosmetics with surprisingly good results. So no matter your motivation (you want to save a few dollars, up your green quotient, or just find a novel way to pass the time), here are 10 cosmetic uses for food that are just as good, if not better, than their store-bought counterparts. (A word to the wise: If you have sensitive skin or processed hair, try these remedies on a small patch of skin or hair first.)

1. Egg White Mask. You can either save your leftover egg whites for an omelet

or angel food cake, or use them for your next facial. Just one white, beaten until smooth, is enough to cover your face. As with other masks, let it dry completely, then rinse off. It will leave you feeling refreshed, and your skin will be noticeably more taut.

2. Oatmeal Face Wash. Oatmeal has calming properties that soothe the skin and help reduce redness. It can be used in a variety of ways, from a body wash to a mask, but the most basic is this simple face wash: Mix together equal parts warm honey and lemon juice, then stir in three parts instant oatmeal until it turns into a paste. Apply to your face, then wash off with warm water.

3. Vinegar Hair Cleaner. Swap your conditioner for vinegar twice a month and you’ll get rid of any nasty buildup, as well as improve your hair’s silkiness and shine. Seriously. Don’t use dark or expensive vinegars; stick to cider or white wine vinegar for less strain on the wallet and better results. But don’t do this more than a few times a month or you’ll risk drying out your hair.

4. Honey and Brown Sugar Scrub. Fill a jar about two-thirds full with honey, add a scoop of brown sugar and one halved vanilla bean, and mix. Keep this in the shower and use it as a body scrub that will leave you smelling nice and feeling smooth.

5. Lemon Juice Lightener. Beach-goers have been doing this for years to lighten their locks. Just combine the juice of half a lemon with a handful of leave-in conditioner (which is less goopy than regular conditioner), spread on your hair, and comb through, then wash out. (Note: Highlighted or color-treated hair should be spared this homemade remedy, which could make your hair look brassy.) Many people also apply lemon juice directly to age spots to bleach them out, though this should be avoided on sensitive skin because lemon juice is highly acidic.

6. Coffee: Scrub and Shine-Maker. Your leftover coffee grounds can clog your drain or, if you’re feeling adventurous, be used as an invigorating scrub. For more details, check out this CHOW Tip. Needless to say, avoid doing this if you have sensitive skin. Leftover brewed coffee can also be mixed with some coffee grounds and conditioner to help increase shine in dark hair.

7. Tea Bag Eye Rejuvenator. The quintessential home cosmetic remedy is using cucumber slices on the eyes to reduce puffiness. While that certainly works, brewed black tea bags are even more effective. Place them on your eyes (which should be closed, of course) and let the tannins work their magic—about five minutes should do the trick.

8. Baking Soda Teeth Cleaner. Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with a quarter teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide for one of the most basic forms of tooth care that exists. It’ll clean your teeth (some would argue better than store-bought toothpaste), but you’ll be missing out on the minty freshness. Of course, you could just go totally au naturel and gnaw a bit of spearmint for that.

9. Oil Moisturizer. Take a page from many a Mediterranean grandmother: Olive oil works fabulously as a lotion. Use too much and you’ll smell like pasta, but in small doses it works wonders as a daily lotion or massage oil. If olive oil isn’t your thing, sesame oil (regular not toasted), peanut oil, almond oil, and argan oil work too.

10. Cornstarch Bath Powder. Superabsorbent and extremely fine, cornstarch is the kitchen equivalent of baby powder and can be used in the same way. Combine it with a few leaves of a nice-smelling dried herb (rosemary, lavender, or sage, for instance) and pulse it in the food processor until evenly mixed. Sift out any large stray leaf bits, transfer to a container with a shake top (like an old baby powder bottle), and use to freshen up anything from your body to your sneakers.

BANANAS with dark patches on yellow skin..

The fully ripe banana produces a substance called TNF (Tumor Necrosis Factor) which has the
ability to combat abnormal cells.
So don’t be surprised very soon the shop will go out of stock for
bananas.
As the banana ripens, it develops dark spots or patches on the skin. The
more dark patches it has, the higher will be its’ immunity enhancement quality .
Hence the Japanese love bananas for a good reason.
According to a Japanese scientific research,
banana contains TNF which has anti-cancer properties.
The degree of anti-cancer effect corresponds to the degree of ripeness of the fruit,
i.e. the riper the banana, the better
the anti-cancer quality..
In an animal experiment carried out by a professor in Tokyo University comparing
the various health benefits of different fruits, using banana, grape,
apple, water melon, pineapple, pear and persimmon, it was found that
banana gave the best results. It increased the number of white blood
cells, enhanced the immunity of the body and produced anti-cancer
substance TNF.
The recommendation is to eat 1 to 2 banana a day to increase your body
immunity to diseases like cold, flu and others.
According to the Japanese professor, yellow skin bananas with dark spots
on it are 8 times more effective in enhancing the property of white
blood cells than the green skin version

  1. Papaya has become known as a leading ingredient in skin whitening products because it contains papain, a natural enzyme that promotes skin renewal and cell turnover. It helps in exfoliating the skin to reveal newer cells, and has restorative properties that soften the skin. To maximize the benefits of papaya, use papaya soap to exfoliate as well as papaya lotion to moisturize your skin.
  2. Eating papaya may also aid in whitening skin and overall skin clarity.            Papaya is rich in vitamins A, E and C, and other anti-oxidants that help in giving skin the moisture and protection it needs. The nutrients contained in the papaya fruit helps in the skin’s healing as well. In certain cultures in South America and Asia, papaya is eaten not only as a ripe fruit but also as a young, green fruit used in stews and soups. Papaya leaves are also sometimes mixed into some dishes as well. A ripe papaya fruit can also be made into shakes and smoothies, or eaten as a stand-alone fruit snack after meals.
  3. Complement a papaya regimen with other nutrients and ways to protect your skin, such as moisturizers and sunscreen. Regular care, maintenance and a good hygiene are components of naturally beautiful skin.

How to Whiten With Papaya

Papaya contains an enzyme that benefits the skin.

Papaya is an active ingredient in many commercial beauty products that are designed to lighten the skin. Papain, an enzyme contained in the papaya, will help to soften and whiten the skin, reducing the appearance of freckles and age spots. It also has exfoliation properties, removing dead skin. It is quite simple to prepare the papaya yourself. No special materials are necessary and you can have all of the benefits of commercially prepared papaya products at a fraction of the price. You will also have complete control over the quality of the ingredients. The papaya product you make yourself will be free of chemical additives.

Instruction:

  1. Choose a healthy papaya. It should be ripe, but not too soft. Try to find one without bruises. Peel the papaya and remove any seeds that might be present. Cut it into medium-sized pieces with a paring knife.
  2. Place the papaya pieces in a blender. Blend it at medium until it forms a thick, smooth mash. This should take up to 30 seconds.
  3. Wash your face and gently dry it. Do the same with any other area of your body that you wish to lighten. Apply the papaya paste directly to your face and other parts of your skin, avoiding the area close to your eyes. Leave it on for about 15 minutes.
  4. Rinse the papaya mash off your face with warm water. Pat your face dry with a clean towel. Then apply your usual face moisturizer.
  5. Repeat this process three times per week. After about three weeks you should notice some positive results

8 hair care treatments you can make yourself

For all hair types
“The [raw] egg is really the best of all worlds,” saysJanice Cox, author of “Natural Beauty at Home”. The yolk, rich in fats and proteins, is naturally moisturizing, while the white, which contains bacteria-eating enzymes, removes unwanted oils, she explains.
To use: For normal hair, use the entire egg to condition hair; use egg whites only to treat oily hair; use egg yolks only to moisturize dry, brittle hair, Cox says. Use 1/2 cup of whichever egg mixture is appropriate for you and apply to clean, damp hair. If there isn’t enough egg to coat scalp and hair, use more as needed. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse with cool water (to prevent egg from “cooking”) and shampoo hair. Whole egg and yolks-only treatments can be applied once a month; whites-only treatment can be applied every two weeks.
For dull hair
Styling products (as well as air pollution) can leave a film that both saps moisture and dulls shine — but dairy products like sour cream and plain yogurt can help reverse this damage. “Lactic acid gently strips away dirt while the milk fat moisturizes,” says Lisa Belkin, author of “The Cosmetics Cookbook”.
To Use: Massage 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt into damp hair and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, followed by cool water, then shampoo hair as you normally would. Treatment can be applied every other week.
For itchy scalp
To fight flakes — brought on by poor diet, stress and climate, among other factors — try a lemon juice and olive oil mixture in your hair. “The acidity in lemon juice helps rid your scalp of any loose, dry flakes of skin, while the olive oil moisturizes the [newly exposed] skin on your head,” says Cox.
To Use: Mix 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, 2 tablespoons olive oil and 2 tablespoons water, and massage into damp scalp. Let mixture sit for 20 minutes, then rinse and shampoo hair. Treatment can be applied every other week.
For limp or fine hair
To add body to hair, reach for an unlikely beauty beverage: beer! The fermented drink contains generous supplies of yeast, which works to plump tired tresses, explains Cox.
To use: Mix 1/2 cup flat beer (pour beer into a container and let it sit out for a couple of hours to deplete carbonation) with 1 teaspoon light oil (sunflower or canola) and a raw egg. Apply to clean, damp hair, let sit for 15 minutes, then rinse with cool water. Or add flat beer only to a spray bottle and spritz onto dry hair. “When the liquid evaporates, the remaining protein residue (from the wheat, malt or hops) continues to strengthen and structure hair,” says Belkin. Treatments can be applied every other week.
For dry or sun-damaged hair
Whatever your hair-dehydrating demon — hard water, sun overexposure, your trusty flat iron — nature’s sweetener can help. “Honey is a natural humectant, which means it attracts and locks in moisture,” says Cox.
To use: Massage approximately 1/2 cup honey into clean, damp hair, let sit for 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water. You can also add 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil to loosen the honey for easier application. For extremely sun-damaged hair, trying mixing honey with 1 to 2 tablespoons of a protein-rich ingredient, like avocado or egg yolk, which will help replenish the keratin protein bonds that UV rays attack. Treatment can be applied once a month.
For oily or greasy hair
“Used properly, [cornmeal or cornstarch] is an inexpensive way to remove oil and grease,” says Belkin.
To use: Pour 1 tablespoon cornmeal or cornstarch into an empty salt or pepper shaker and sprinkle onto dry hair and scalp until you’ve used it all. After 10 minutes, use a paddle hairbrush to completely brush it out. Treatment can be applied every other day.
For frizzy hair
Home beauty experts swear by avocado — and not just to repair damaged hair. Its oils (which are light and moist like our own natural skin secretions) and proteins boast the best combination of nutrients for smoothing and weighing down unruly hair, explains Cox.
To use: Mash up half an avocado and massage into clean, damp hair. Let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing with water. Amp up moisturizing power by combining mashed avocado with 1 to 2 tablespoons of a hydrating ingredient, like sour cream, egg yolks or mayonnaise. Treatment can be applied every two weeks.
For residue-ridden hair
“Nothing eats through product buildup like baking soda,” Cox says. Sodium bicarbonate essentially breaks down anything acidic.
To Use: Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons baking soda with small amounts of water until a thick paste forms. Massage into damp hair and let sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with water, then shampoo hair. Treatment can be applied every two weeks.
